In this week’s Whiteboard Friday, Rand examines some of the intricacies around anchor text.

  • Multiple anchors from the same page do not provide more value. Multiple anchors from different pages and domains are better.

  • Diversity of anchor text links provides the strongest benefit.

  • Fluctuating the anchor text itself is debatable, though many think it may help most spam/manipulation.

  • The first anchor text in the HTML of a page, where the anchor text is repeated, is what Google counts.

  • Internal anchor text helps a tiny bit, external anchor text help a lot.

  • If a link uses an image, the alt attribute usually becomes the anchor text. If there is no alt attribute, the surrounding text can be used.

  • Surrounding text is likely used as a signal, especially if the anchor itself doesn’t have much value/context.
