This week Rand talks about the recent changes that signal a coming transformation for search. Search has come a long way since its creation. From keywords, to links, to anchor text and temporal analysis, today, it’s all about the Social Graph.
The Rise of the Social Graph
Some of the social channels include Twitter, Facebook, Social Bookmarking and Email Sharing. Google particularly has done a lot of work around these channels. These include their Twitter and Facebook deals, SearchWiki, Google Wave, Gmail, which has evolved to Google Buzz, and Social Search. All of this suggests a new factor in search, with the social graph increasing in importance. One drawback to this is not all important information is shared or shareable, which is where the link graph will still win out in importance.
